Hi, Your baby is so cute..I almost got a russian hatchling, but instead I got a redfoot....I was intimidated by the hibernation thing with the russians, I didn't think I could do it properly..But I love the way the Russians look!!!Cute!!!
Bye, Shawne1_

Hey Thanks! This is my first Tortoise and I'm in love. I was torn between the russian and the red foot. I know several people that have russians that don't hibernate them. The ones that do put them in a fridge at 40 degrees.
The person my husband got this one from said I didn't have to hibernate unless I wanted to. He also thought it would be better not too until the baby's bigger. Not sure what I'll do yet. I'm just enjoying this baby for now and will decide about hibernation when that time gets here. I already have everything for hibernation if I do that.

What a cute baby. I was about to get one until my hubby's transmission went out.
I think I know you. Do you live in Huntsville too? A friend of mine just got one.

I keep a couple of female russians and have had good success without hibernation. If you plan on breeding them, then that may be another story.

I noticed today that Stoli has a hook at the end of the tail. How big do they have to be before you can tell what sex they?

Hey Cdp, I sent you an e-mail

"I noticed today that Stoli has a hook at the end of the tail. How big do they have to be before you can tell what sex they?"

you have a way to go yet. males and females have "hooks" when young, the male's just gets huge -- later.

i wouldn't worry about hibernation. i've been breeding russians for years and don't cool down any of the young until they are about five.
