Sand is relatively easy to clean with a sifter . . however you shouldn't use sand with a reptile smaller than 6 inches. The risk of impaction runs higher with the smaller critters. If your gecko is under 6 inches, stick with the cage carpet until he grows some more.
ok, thanks. about how much do geckos cost to care a mounthm and do you put d3 and vitamin in the bowl with calci or just when dusting? and wats the mixing ratio of caci, vitamin, and d3? and since they need calcium is caci sand ok as a substate? im sorry for all the questions i just dont want to mess up with carring for my leo when it comes.
Unless your getting a full grown adult leo, I wouldn't run the risk. Sand is a wonderful subrate for terriums, its easy to clean, and cheap, all sand however impacts, it is due to the fact that sand clumps together when it gets wet (even calci-sand). I tried to figure out how much I spend on my geckos a month, but I have four, so it gets kinda complicated, I know that one might cost you at most like ten dollars a week, so about thirty dollars a month. Make sure you have humid hide (margerine container turned upside down w/ moist substrate underneath it. As far as the supplement, if ya have a pet store go and ask for the brand of supplement that leo's are best suited for, it will be pre-mixed. Congrats on your leo
You really want to avoid using CalciSand, ReptiSand, etc. Having calcium in the sand encourages the Leos to eat it...Which you don't want them to do. Washed/Sifted play sand is your best bet.
