A reminder why I don't like Vision Cages for anything but large snakes

phobos Feb 27, 2005 03:45 PM

A nasty surprise waiting for me above the Visions 221 door where it's recessed. I usually install Foam inserts to prevent this but forgot to do it. My Terciopelo gave me a subtle reminder that I needed to do that right away. Fortunately when I could not see him after probing in the hiding spots with my long hook. I looked up and this is that I saw waiting for my arm or hand to appear.

WOW! You are lucky! I've got to say... that's one snake that I would NOT want to get hit by. There's some really crazy pics of B. Asper bite victims in Venomous Snakes of the Western Hemisphere.... I think they're probably the most graphic I've ever seen. I'd get right on that if I were you. :D

Yes, I would not like to take a hit from Mr. Asper. That snake has serious knock down power. He hit a mouse and it just doesen't go anywhere, just lays there twitching for a few seconds. Takes my Bitis a hell of a lot longer to get the same results.

I was lucky in a sense but I never enter a cage with any part of my body unless I can see where the beastie is, even then I will remove it before working inside.

There is a ledge above & below the sliding glass door. It is a BIGTIME problem that not everyone is aware of, this is why I took the picture and posted it. I personally know a Rattlesnake researcher at ASU that was tagged when he grabbed the bottom lip and did not see the juv. Atrox hiding there.

I stuff the recesses with foam and remove the hiding place when I get it ready for habitation. In this case I did the bottom, added the substrate then forgot to do the top. This picture is look straight up with the camera ,just even with the tracts for the glass.

Here's a nornal picture of the him.

...I don't use Visions for ANY juvenile snakes less than 3' long. There are just to many places to hide, and too much risk in them squeezing through the doors. Believe it or not, Sterlite shoeboxes with SNAP LIDS, are FAR SUPERIOR to Visions in terms of security. I use these for neonate(
