A "Crapy" question

melon88 Feb 27, 2005 07:44 PM

We are new to Ball Pythons but with the help from this group we are learning all the time. So far (2 1/2 months) it seems to be going well. He is eating and growing and interacting with the whole family. OK now for the question. When he finally does poop there are two packages, one looks as you would expect, the other yellow in color. Is this normal?

Snake waste has three components: a clear, liquid urine, a chalky white urate (both products of the kidney), and a blackish-brown fecal material. Most often they all come out together but sometimes they will come out separately. Hope this helps!

That's normal. The yellow stuff is actually their urine. Snakes do not "pee" like mammals; instead they expel their urates in a solid form. I believe it has to do with conserving water in the body.
If the feces were runny, not in a solid mass, I would worry about internal parasites. They should look like a "log."

Thanks for the replies and making things clear. This is what I expected but was not sure about it.
