Jane B. - YOLK PERONTONITIS ?.....Is that when the egg shell ruptures inside the ig.

rhino Jul 08, 2003 01:42 AM

and the yolk covers the internal organs ? I believe D.Blair lost a rhino to this. It is one of my greatest concerns during the egg season, mine get super restless just before laying, sometimes climbing 6ft up the screen and then jumping down. In the past it has been a little like watching russian roullete.

Hey!! I was just thinking about you last night wondering where you've been and if you've completed your move. What a coincidence! Yes, egg peritonitis occurs when an egg ruptures in the abdomen. Infection sets in quickly, and even if detected early, it's extremely difficult to treat successfully. Unfortunately Doonie became ill overnight. She seemed quite normal the evening before but by 8am was on death's door. I miss her terribly. Doonie lived primarily in my bedroom and she was my bed buddy. We spent alot of time together.

Just a few more boxes to unpack. Just got back from North Korea.
Rhinos took a beating while I was gone(2 months). Bubbles brother (still unnamed) got out of his cage and was free roaming with the bigger adults(in a heated garage loft). They did not like him too much and he is still shell shocked. Several UV lights got unplugged and am wondering if any viable eggs will be layed this year. I am in the process of getting outdoor setups in place. Having Rhinos in NY is about 5 times the work of owning them in S. Cal. We're on 2 acres, but that does not help when they need to stay indoors 9 months out of the year. I am going to have to scale back. How is Bubbles doing ? My females all have scared necks and am expecting eggs or stones earlier than usual.

John, I'm sorry to hear about the Rhino troubles you had while away. Give Bubbles' brother a nice head rub for me and tell him he can come visit whenever he likes.
Bubbles is doing well. She is housed with Scrub, the year younger male, but fights his breeding advances and is quite successfull at it. I've seen many, many attempts on his part but never completion of the mating. Both animals are as sweet as ever, Bubbles even more so.
Loofah, the November '01 hatch Rhino that I got from Bob, is still growing and looking good. He was purchased as a female but definately is a boy. At almost 2 years of age he is calming down nicely and becoming quite social. He's going to be another great animal.
All other Cyclura are doing well. MiMi is still a couch potato and loves her baths. Azul is maturing into a beautiful hybrid male and is nice most of the time. Sometimes he insists on being a punk tho. The young Cubans are just wonderful! I sold the little unknown Cyclura (we believe it was nubila/Caymanensis) to a friend in Wisconsin 2 months ago and last week she dropped 6 HUGE eggs.
I'm busy as ever with 25 rescue GGI's here right now. I've fallen hard for monitors and have a few of those also, not to mention the BD's, Frillies, Water Dragons, Bassie, Sheltopusik, Uromastyx, etc. LOL
Keep in touch! I missed ya around here!

Thanks for the update Jane, Sounds like you have your hands full. Bubs should give in to scrubs when the time is right. I have witnessed similar ordeals more than once. Keep us posted. My normal emails are changing, but jaristei@yahoo.com is still operational. best regards, John
