Breeding Cali Kings, 1st Try

kyote Feb 28, 2005 05:28 PM

I have 2 Claifornia kings that I'm trying to breed, This will be my first time at trying to breed them. The female is a
Hi-Yellow Albino banana king and the male is brown with cream stripes.(I havent frigure out his exact breed just yet since I aquired him less than 6 months ago the pets store he came from didn't even know {how stupid}) anyways, I've put the female through hibernation. The male just wouldn't hibernate for some reason he kept moving around like he was hungry and never settled down like the female so I just kept him at normal temp. (maybe its because the store I got him from didnt hibernate him either, cause he's over 4ft long so he's got to be maybe more than 5 yrs old and perhaps never hibernated before)

I may may have put the female into hibernation too early . (late Nov to Early Feb) She is feeding well now and is very plump, but Its been almost a month and she hasn't had her post-hibernation shed. Whats taking so long? How long does it usually take?

For now I've been putting the female into the males cage every week or so to see if anything happen, a few times they act like they're going to mate then they just lay there next to each other and dont do nothin. I guess I'm a little too anxious..maybe..
Any suggestions???

The snakes need to be brumated for atleast 6 weeks to stimulate and re-energize the hormones for successful breeding. It's likely you will be unsuccessful with this pair, this year. Seperate them, feed them, and pair them up 2 weeks from now after the female has a shed, and see what happens. If they don't breed, it's unlikely that they will this year.

ok thanks, I needed to know something, I probably did hibernate the female too short and by not hibernating the male at all I probably completly blew it. Hopefully 2 weeks from now something does happen, if it dosent theres always next year.(Hopefully I can get the male to hibernate then)
And maybe I can get the femal a bit bigger. how big shouls a female be for an appropriate berrding size, mine is close to
3 ft

She's probably ready this year, females are good to go at 36" and good body size/weight. If she doesn't go this year, she will next year, this should give her more time to build up more weight.

It's more important that the male be cycled, best to brumate both. You should have brumated your male, him being active is irrelevant. If you brought the temps down to 50-55 degrees he won't be active. Males should be brumated. I put mine down in November and haven't brought them back up yet. So you sure didn't have her down for too long. And it hasn't been a month yet and she hasn't shed.......... be patient. Frequent feedings should prompt her to shed.

Are you sure you have a (1.1) pair?

It is not too late for them to breed. You actually have a couple of months.

I probably should have said this from the start, I am fairly new to the whole concept of breeding snakes.
(Which means I don't know what "1.1 pair" means)
It was a really bad move not to hibernate the male, I can admit that, I just didn't know what to do, thats why I left him at close to normal temps, actually I just didnt turn his heat souces on so he was at room temp most of the time, (Whis I know couldn't qualify as hibernation anyways...)

The first number represents males and the second number is females. So if someone said they had (1.2) that would mean 1 male and 2 females.

Keep trying.

oh yea thanks, thats one thing I needed to know .I though it was something complicated. I'm sure I have a 1.1 pair, I sexed them myself. {no thanks to my unprofessional vet}

thanks again

You should have kept the male at low temps. Our female was active for quite some time, she just wouldnt sleep. She eventually gave up and went to sleep though, and now she is warming up. Now, you should wait until after the shed, and if the female is ready to breed, she will release her pheromones and you should notice the male going crazy trying to find her. That is the right time to put them together, and I would place the male into the female's enclosure where the scent is highest.
