Instead of adding a foot to the width I would make it a foot longer, so it would be 48x24. Thats what my cage is and he has plenty of room. It also makes it easier to access, and fits better against a wall.

The cage is in my room, I can't make it over 36" long nor wider that 36" and wanted Freddy to be able to roam. We're making a light weight tank. Very nice so far.
