Bought My Alligator

SpotIsMyGator Mar 01, 2005 08:28 AM

Hello my name is Matt. I used to frequent this forum about 4 years ago.

I finally decided to make the plunge and get a alligator. I brought him home yesterday. His/Her name is Spot. He is 12" long and I have not wighed him yet. I have my first vet appointment for next wednesday(just a checkup).

He seems to be pretty shy. He kept tryint to hide in the corner so I went out last night and bought a divider for his enclosure. He can now stay behind that and hopefully feel more secure.

I started him off with some crickets just to see what level of interest he had on eating. Basically he ignored them. Although this morning I think there was one missing(doubt he ate it but who knows).

I am definately looking to handle him regularly. This may stress him at first, but I think it will reduce stress over time with cleanings etc. if he is used to me. Should I start handling him right away, or wait for him to become accustomed to his new enclosure? Recomendations?

Thanks, looking forward to becoming a regular here!

Matt

As with any animal, give him about a week to settle in to his new environment. After that you can try handling and feeding him. After he gets accustomed to things, that he will probably consider eating a whole lot more, and handling wont' be quite as stressful for him.
