Preparations...

Doug89 Mar 01, 2005 10:11 AM

Hey Guys,
I see my "Bany Good Breeders" Post got gunned down. I ordered my snake last night (cost me more than i expected $90 (i was gonna pay $65 but as you read my breeder sold em all)). I also ordered a nice big cage for my new Leucistic Texas Rat Snake. I just wanted to know of any preparations that need to be carried out for her. Thanks a bunch!

PS- My Pet Dog is very ill, wish her luck (she goes to the vet in about 30 minutes) I dont know if she'll make it. Thanks for your help guys!

What size tank did you order? How old is this leucy?

I'd get aspen, two hiding spots, heat light or UTH (i prefer overhead heat), and some "silk" leaves. More information on the tank you ordered will be helpful, however.

The tank is 2 foot x 14" x 14". I'm planning on using newspaper (we have tons of it laying around from my dogs). The tank i ordered also has an overhead florescent light and i believe it also has a porcelin light fixture (that produces heat right?). Thanks for your help Oh, the snake is almost a Yearling size, i dont know what that means though, i think she is 6 months old.

PS- My dog passed away about 20 minutes after i posted this thread, i think she may have had a heart attack.

Sorry to hear about your dog man... I may get pummeled with rotten tomatoes but my dogs are my favorite pets.

Make sure that it either has a sliding (locking) top, or if you get one that just goes over the top of the tank, make sure you get some clips for it. I would definately add some greenery in there... your snake is probably around 15-18 inches.

You are probably thinking of a ceramic heat emitter.. it screws into a light socket basically and it emits heat. You will need to get a thermostat or a rheostat if it didnt come with one, to control the temperature. In that small of a tank if you dont use one, it's going to get over 100 degrees probably. An alternative would be to go down to Home Depot and get yourself a Lutron table lamp dimmer. These cost about $11 and work wonders. Good luck.
