When Building A Cage

onenine25 Mar 01, 2005 11:26 AM

I am in the process of building a cage. As far as heating goes, should I mount the fixtures inside the enclosure or should I drill holes in the roof portion of the cage large enough to place my dome lights perfectly over. The height will most likely be 2 feet. I curently have 4 bulbs on the fish tank they use now. 1 100w Zoomed Powersun, 1 Standard 75w, A Reptisun 10 Power Compact, and a 18w Reptisun 8 Florecent. I do plan on incorporating all these lights into the new enclosure so I wanted to check to see what you all think.

Thanks!

I make all my enclosures with white melamine, and put the lights inside for two reasons. One being that I can always stack another cage on top as my colony grows and the second reason is that I can heat and light them with much less power/bulbs then if the top was open. The white melamine reflects a lot of light so with a nice fluorescent fixture, and incandescent bulb the cages are very bright, and temps are easily obtained without multiple high wattage bulbs. In a fish tank so much heat is lost out the top you have to use so much energy to get the basking temp correct. You say you wanted to incorporate all the lighting you currently use in your new cage. I would be concerned that if you put the lights inside you will not need all those bulbs and that high of wattage bulbs to get the temp, and gradient you need. Also if you just cut the holes perfect to fit your fixtures I think you still will have to adjust bulb wattage as now a lot more of the heat is being trapped then it was before with an open topped aquarium.

So if I just use the 10.0 Power Compact, and possibly the 100w Power Sun. I can mount them inside the enclosure from two top mounted fixtures. Do you happen to have a few pics or plans for your cages?

I'm sorry but I'm away from home and dont have access to my picture files. I think I may have one pic on my webshot link, but you really cant see the light fixture and cage design to well.

Sure you could put in two incandescent fixtures and use your powersun, and 10.0 compact fluorescent. I would depending on the legnth of the cage your making put in a long fluorescent light for added light throughout the cage.

I make my cages 4x2x20 inch high with sliding plexi doors, and use vents for air exchange on each side. For light fixtures I use a dual fluorescent 3ft fixture which holds reptisun 5.0 or 10.0's for uvb/light intensity, and I put an incandscent fixture for heat over the basking spot. If you go to www.cagecrafters.homestead.com they are the exact cages I first purchased, and then built the rest of mine to match them.

So Home Depot should have the vents... like used for floor vents in an HVAC? The flourecent fixture is just a double shoplight? I think I should take a stab at this over the weekend... I had planned a nice corner style cage so we will see what comes out. Thanks for the info

Exactly the vents are regular heating/cooling vent covers you would find at home depot, and the fluorescent is just a dual fixture shop light, and that can be purchaed at home depot as well. Good luck with your cage. post some pics when you get everything together and set up. A corner unit would be beautiful.
