That is an intergrade between the subspecues californiae and splendida. Those sort of kings are fairly common in southern AZ. Neat looking snakes.

I often see people refer to these sort of intergrades as yumensis, which is technically incorrect. Not only is yumensis an invalid subspecies, but the real yuma king (when it was first described) was actually a narrow banded cal x nigrita intergrade which really didn't show any splendida influence.

thanks for the fast and qualified answer!

but what should i do when i went breed with them (i guess i've two males).

should/could i breed them with cal./splen. or would this create some kind of ... lets call it "bastards" ??

Since it is an intergrade (I fully agree with the ID) either snake would be ok to breed with as it is allready a Mutt.

To you it might be a "mutt", but some of us happen to find natural intergrades just as pleasing as a pure breed. For instance, the natural occurring Red X Eastern milk here in KY are very nice looking snakes that Mother Nature has created. I find the natural occurring intergrades interesting.

Before ye get on yer high horse...I have nothing against a good NATURAL (intergrade) mutt. But, I call them as I see them.
