Afraid she is dying....

cutiepie Mar 02, 2005 07:40 AM

A year ago, I purchased three coleony mitratus geckos from a pet store within a hardware store. They had been kept on sand (first warning sign) and never sprayed or fed dusted crickets. We decided to rescue them and take them in. All three geckos got treated for a huge overload of parasites (roundworms and strongyloid worms). Unfortunately, it wasn't good enough for two of them and they ended up dying despite treatment. I also didn't know how old they were. When they died, I told the pet store and their excuse was "We don't know anything about lizards". I felt like slapping them and asking them why they sold them.

The last one from there has been doing well until recently. She is now losing weight and appears to have fluid in her abdomen. On top of this her eyes appear to be glued shut for some reason. I've tried using warm water on cotton swabs to help get the eyes open, to no avail. Sometimes she'll open one halfway, but it doesn't stay open for long. I am afraid she is old too. She hasn't grown at all since we've gotten her.
Right now, I am just so frustrated with the pet store that can't take care of its pets. It stinks really bad when I walk in there. I personally own 23 rats and no way does it smell half as bad as that store, which maybe has 5 rats total. The place claims that iguanas are perfect for beginners, another big problem. All of its animals have trouble shedding.
Is there any way to help get her eyes open, or is she going blind? Also, I would like to know if there's a way to report the store for its bad husbandry of these animals and lack of knowledge on how to take care of them.

if you don't know where to look, go into an animal rescue or shelter and ask them about it. if the store isn't even trying to care for the animals properly and doesn't follow basic animal care, then the animals will likely be removed.

the petstore here was pretty bad about animal care and i went in to find a blue tongue skink thats scales were equivalent to that of a bearded dragon. it was suffering severly from mites and who knows what else. i complained to the manager and told him what he needed to do to care for the darn thing and less than two weeks later it was looking fine and eating great. if you tell the store that you are going to report it if they don't make any changes, maybe even get them a caresheet and tell them to follow it closely, you'll be back and if you don't see any changes you will report it. you may not feel it is your business to do this, but a lot of the time this is all that it takes and you can make the difference.

Thanks. I've printed off some care sheets on information for the species and how to take care of it. The biggest thing that made me mad was the fact that these geckos are tropical in nature and were put in a desert environment. Come to think of it, all reptiles, whether they are water loving or not go into a desert environment. This weekend I will go up there and give them the caresheets. If they don't change the way they function, I will! They will be reported and I will make it a point to put flyers up about boycotting the store, as well as contacting business bureaus about them.

Are you sure she does not have a respiratory infection? Usually with lizards when their eyes are suck shut, it goes hand in hand with resp infections.

Maybe you should have her checked out. Are her temps high enough?

I hope she will be okay, I like these guys, I have a young central american banded, and shes a real cutie!

I sure wish you the best with her.

She died tonight After seeing the pain and suffering these animals go through because they were taken from the wild and suffered stress for god knows how long in captivity at that stupid store, I'm sure she's more at peace now and is with the two others that passed. My heart is broken.... I filed a rip-off report at ripoffreport.com on the store and hopefully someone will see it and refuse to visit that pet store.

Rest in peace, Ozzy, Cheech, and Eve.

Geesh, I had just posted above, and read this when I finished.

Very Sad! Sorry to hear that. Hope you feel better soon.

Take Care,

It's hard to go into a store and see animals that aren't cared for properly, but your experience with this store points up the reason why we shouldn't try to rescue animals from them. Whenever you buy an animal, you have created both the perception of demand, and a vacant cage for them to refill. If no one buys their lizards, eventually they will stop selling them.

I hope that your efforts to educate them at least helps the animals that are there already, but it will take a lot of follow up visits to see if there is any long-term change. If not, I would hope you can make the effort to get local animal rescue and humane society involved. Also, in some jurisdictions, local law enforcement can get involved as well if the store is seriously mistreating their animals.

Sorry for your loss, let's hope for a better future for the other herps at that store.
