extremely skinny...

sebastian924 Mar 02, 2005 10:11 AM

I recently got 5 juvies, all about a month old. Four of them are def. gaining weight and look wonderful. Last night I separated the smallest one from the bunch and set him up in his own enclosure. I'm still a little worried, his color, eyes, feet etc. look fine, but he is really really skinny. Any ideas?

and what are you feeding it?
it's really hard to say if you haven't had them for awhile because you can't see any decrease in appetite or anything. i would definately keep it separated from the others for many reasons, first being that it may not be getting any food due to competition, second would be for infection reasons, you may want to look at this. http://www.neoscales.com/Entamoeba.htm

just be sure to keep offering food and monitor eating habits. try several things to see if it prefers one food over another.

...I wouldn't wait any longer to begin the treatment for an amoebic infection (Flagyl). The treatment is not particularly dangerous, and starting early gives you the best chance of recovery. Waiting to see if it gains weight may allow time for secondary problems to occur and those are very hard to deal with at that point.

It should also be noted that Flagyl is very bitter. Placing it in food may result in it being ignored - twice as bad (no food or medicine). So individual oral dosing with a suspension is best. Your vet can do this for you, or you can email me and I’ll explain how to go about making it (assuming you get the first part, the Flagyl).

Again there are other causes of weight loss (as already pointed out). But an amoeba should be on of the first things suspected in Crestd Geckos. If you jump right on it - you will save your gecko.
