Thinking about getting a Red Tegu- advice?

ecmorrell Mar 02, 2005 11:01 AM

So I've been caring for lots of snakes for a few years now and offer them the best care possible. I make them my #1 financial priority. That's it for my reptile experience.

Basically, I want a pet that is a more active than my snakes, a pet to "play" with, rather than relax with in front of the TV. (My snakes have seen as many movies as I have). I'm thinking about getting a Red Tegu that is mostly grown and living in a pet shop. I've looked up lots of care sheets online, but I'd like to hear ya'll's personal experiences with Tegus. Basically what I've gathered online is this:

Housing: Big enclosure, hot basking spot, cypress mulch, hide box, big water dish. Keep humidity high. This is doable.

Feeding: A mix of fruit and meat with supplements. I haven't been able to figure out how often to feed this girl based on the care sheets online.

What are the drawbacks? What are annoying things that they don't tell you in the care sheets?

I dont know if they are drawbacks but things to think about are the enclosure needs to be BIG, the food bill will be BIG and they can sleep for 4 months out of the year.

here's my care sheet and pics
