We need more info from you. Will this be your first snake? Have you kept snakes before? Why do you need small, and by small, what do you mean? Not over 2 feet long maybe?
Fill us in a little with who you are and we can help you better.

under 4 feet

sidneydawson Mar 02, 2005 09:14 PM

corns would be my recommendation, cal kings and rosy boas may also work...all are gender under 5 feet and relatively easy to care for

I will restrict my suggestions to rodent eating snakes as they are generally the easiest to care for -

A male Rubber Boa (if you can get a captive born one) would stay well under 18 inches and never get too large to eat pinkies. Captive born males are hardy snakes. I have a 10 year old male that is smaller than a 6 month old cornsnake.

Males of several species of sandboa stay under 2 feet and are generally hardy. A male Kenyan would be a good choice.

A male African Housesnake will stay under 30 inches and slender and they are as hardy as a snake comes.

I don't consider Cal Kings or Cornsnakes to be small snakes. There are some small hardy ratsnakes (Dione's ratsnakes, for example) that are pretty hardy, but they are hard to come by.

One of my personal favorites is the South Korean Dione's ratsnake. They are bt. 3 and 4 ft. when fully grown; are as docile as a corn; and are very hardy. I tend to keep small colubrids that make great pets. There are many other species and forms that are small and hardy, but this is one of the easiest and most fun to work with.
