Incomplete Shed: Please Help

snakesta44 Mar 02, 2005 06:38 PM

My kingsnake shed about a month ago. She left a patch of skin on, so I increased the humidity (frequent misting). Still, it didn't come off. Now her eyes have turned milky, so she is going to shed again, and she has a patch of skin on her. I don't want to disturb her and cause her to not shed complety again, and I'm worried that the skin will cause some big problems. It is not around the eyes or on the tip of the tail, and it seems to be peeling off a little bit. Also, it is not around her body, but just on the top. Please Help.

It should come off with the shed coming up. Next time the snake does'nt shed completly, put her in a container with a couple of inches of warm water for a couple of hours, and then remove the leftover skin manually. Should come off easy after soaking. Chris Bodner, CHRIS' COLUBRIDS

Holy crap, no don’t do that.

Just buy you a cheap container big enough for your snake to lie in the bottom comfortably. Cut an entrance in the side. (Preferable with a soldering iron or wood burning tool for smooth edges). Then take a handful of paper towels or more if needed and wet them. Then squeeze them to get the excess water out. (Or they will mold) Shred them up and put the towels and the snake in the container together and seal it up. Put the whole thing back in the cage. Check the snake the next day…. I can almost guarantee that the old shed will be off. If not change the paper towels and do it again. The skin will come off naturally with no chance of damaging the skin underneath.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I actually just found out that if I just put a damp paper towl in her cage, my snake knows to soak in it. What are the best ways to increase the humidity in a cage. I have a humidufier, and I'm always spaying, but the humidity stays at 40-42. I don't think the bedding I have is helping. What would you suggest for bedding. I don't care how it looks, as long as it is ok for the snake, and isn't diffucult to clean. Would newspaper or paper towls be apropriate?

What type of enclosure are you using? An aquarium? What kind of substrate are you using?

You can close off part of the top.
Put in a bigger water dish.
Use paper towels, reptile carpet or newspaper if you want. Get the newspaper from the craft store that has not been printed on, but I think most newspapers now a days use soy ink. Wood chips if that is what you have tends to absorb moisture.

I know there are other things...just have to think about it.

Yeap, it is very hard to control the humidity in an aquarium especially with a screen top.

Maybe I did'nt explain myself. You have to use COMMON SENSE. The snake needs to be soaked enough so the old skin comes off very easily just by brushing it off with your thumb.......No , you should not try to remove it if its firmly attatched .....You can damage the skin under it as stated above.......The above way will work also.......thanks
