Eggs Found

Jaichima Mar 02, 2005 07:13 PM

Hi everyone,
My husband gave me a mountain horned dragon for X-Mas. We didn't know if it was a boy or girl and we were told that it was not fully grown. I was also told that it was ok to put "Gus" (mountain horned dragon) in the tank with my bearded dragon wo is the same size. They are both a foot long and I had no problems with them together for two months. This morning, I found a clutch of eggs being guarded by "Gus". Does anyone have any advice for me. How do we know if the eggs are fertilized or not? If they are, what is the best thing to do for them? Any advice would be appreciated.
Shawn

It is possible that Gus is not fully grown. MHDs are able to reproduce at 18 months of age and aren't fully grown until 2-3 years.

Gus needs a tank of her own. Although beardeds and MHDs are both agamids they are from totally different regions. Beardies are desert animals from Australia and MHDs need cool mountain fog forest set-up and are from Asia. She will most certainly die in the desert.

Check my FAQs page to see eggs being candled and explaination of how do to it. MHDs don't guard their eggs but she was very possibly trying to figure out how to bury them. You are very lucky that she laid them at all as I have had females not lay if the substrate was too dry.

If they are, what is the best thing to do for them?

On my caresheet page click on INCUBATION in the index and it will take you to that section.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Please take the time to read my caresheet and get Gus into the proper set-up. You will find a link to my caresheet under my signature.

I hope this helps. Good luck with Gus and post any additional questions.

Thank you so much! The pet store told my husband that theses two lizards could live together. It goes to show you that some of the info is not always correct just because they own a pet store. Thanks again.
