Weaning rats????????

Bodhisdad Mar 02, 2005 08:07 PM

Hi all, first of all thanks for all of the help with my previous questions. When would i seperate the babies from the mom and dad? My little ones are 30 grams and about three weeks old. When is the female able to get pregnant again? Basicly how do i go about getting another litter going asap. My plan was to seperate the babies asap and raise them up to the sizes i need, i assume the female will not be receptive till this is done, yes?no? Any advice would be helpful, thank you. Clint

The female rat comes into "estrus" pretty soon after initially giving birth. Usually within 12 hours or so. I leave my females in the same cage as the male all the time. I take out my weanlings away from the mom when they start drinking from either the automatic watering system or from bottles. In time frame, it is about 3-4 weeks. If I have to remove pinks or crawlers, fuzzies, etc., I try to leave the mom with at least one to not "mess around" with her maternal instinks.

Thanx, the little ones are starting to eat on there own and mom isn't letting nurse to often, as far as i know. I'll spend some time in the room with them later to see if they are drinking on there own yet. If they are then it would be ok to move them in a tank of there own? Clint

I pull all my pups out at 24 days... they usually initially wean at 21... this gives them another few days to get used to solid food. I also feed them a bit different than my adults.. they get softer foods.. cheerious and oatmeal are usually good for the first week away from the mom.. mixed with a bit of your regular mix of food for the adults...then I don't worry about it... Water is very important to weaning pups though so plenty of it needs to be available.

I tend to cull litters down to 12 or less. By the time they wean there may only be 5 or 8 left with mom. But that said my pups are generally about 50grams at three weeks and 75plus at 4 wks when I take them out. I have a litter right now that is 15 pups to an experienced mom and they are 2 1/2wks old and 45-55grams. Another litter is 50-60grams at 3 wks. and there are 9 of them.

Mom will breed back in the first week (some the first day after kindling) if you keep the group together.

I don't tend to feed lab block for a couple of reasons. Here there is little access except to L/M Square Meals and Kaytee.(not the greatest IMHO) My rats will only eat them for a few days and my pups don't grow as well. I feed dog kibble and switch brands to keep them from being bored. (aiming for low to mid 20%s protein and 10út) I am a tweaker, I do all my animals by feel for the most part....I give them leftovers of pasta, rice, veges, breakfast cereals. I use seed mix (Baymor L/M Dove with 2pts it and 1pt black oil sunflower) to feed my hamsters and mice that aren't working too hard and to wean ratlings to. I have 3-7 litters of rats born at any given time. So, not 1000s but enough to feed my reptiles, baby herps born, give some to friends and sell enough to usually cover their upkeep in food and bedding.
I have tried to get in Mazuri or Harlan Teklan and had no luck finding it locally. I can pick it up at the NYC herp shows but since that is a 4-5hr drive and every 2-3 months it isn't a supply I use. That and I am sceptical that I would like it.
For todays food my rats got all the Dad's dog kibble they want and some stale golden puffs- sugar coated puffed wheat, some romaine lettuce. When this bag of dog kibble runs out I will see who is still eating it in earnest and buy the same or different depending.
Sorry, getting late and I am babbling. I will check back tomorrow.

Hi Sonya, thanks for the info. Judgeing from the difference in weights, my litter may not be quite 3 weeks. I was guesstimating, i should have written down the birth date. I just went up and weighed a couple of more 1 was 41g, and the other was 42g. Lastnite i noticed many drinking on their own and most if not all are eating kibble. I gave mom a small piece of pizza crust and she kept taking the chunks and placing it in the nest for the little ones. She was also doing her best to keep them from nursing. I plan on seperating them tomorrow. Do you think this would be o.k.? I don't know what brand of blocks i've been using, but they prefer the dog kibble. I have been giving them romaine lettuce as well as the other fruits or veggis we have in stock at the time. Is there any food items i would want to stay away from? I think thats it for now thanks again. Clint
