Got Roaches!!

miskittlegrl Mar 02, 2005 09:06 PM

Hi everyone. Today my order of blaptica dubias came in!! I only got 20 (5 small nymphs and 15 medium-large nymphs) and they are so cute!! I HATE roaches/crickets/bugs in general but these guys are kinda neat. They are settling in very nicely. I hope to have a nice little colony in a few months to feed to my BD. I only have one 4 month old male BD to feed them to so that's why I didnt get a whole bunch. I fed him the 5 small nymphs tonight and he LOVED THEM!!!! He gobbled them up so fast and was looking for more!!! I can't wait!! Thank you so much James (James Tu) for hooking me up with them!! For food I have been feeding them commercial insect gutload, crushed dog food, high protein fish food, and veggie stems (for water). How does this sound? I know it's not the best but it will have to work for now. I will try to get some of the roach food off of cricketfood.com and I will be feeding them different veggies also. They are in a 17gallon rubbermaid tub that is not very high but has a lot of floor space (as much as a 29gallon!!) and I have a big egg crate in there along with a paper plate (cut up) that has the food on it and a veggie stem. How does this sound? I would like to put a little heat lamp/mat in there for warmth because it was only 78F in the tub and I know they need 90F for proper growth and fast breeding so hopefully I'll get some money so I can go buy one although wouldnt the heat mat melt the plastic of the container?? Thanks
Meghan

HEY! I am seriously thinking about going to roaches instead of crix! So your BD had great results with them? Wonderful! Where did you get the roaches? By the way, the heat pad WILL NOT melt the rubbermaid container, I promise, I do it all the time!! One of my BD's travels with me on a normal basis! Thanks for the post, I think you have swung my vote deffinetly to go with roaches now!

Hi Lins,
I would DEFINATELY reccomend them!! I HATE the crix smell, sound, and jumpiness!! These guys dont smell, dont make noise, breed easily w/ no special stuff (so I'll never have to buy more unless I want to and no more crickets once they start breeding!!), and arent as fast so Sam will have a lot more confidence in himself (he keeps missing the crix so he's almost stopped trying). And these guys DONT climb or fly!! That was a BIG plus for me because I would NOT get one that climbed because Im not that good at keeping insects in the cage. It takes a while for the non climbing species to establish a breeding colony but if you are patient then they are for you. Some of the climbing ones (lobsters for example) breed VERY fast/easy but they climb. I got them from James on here (James Tu) and they were a VERY good price!! Good luck

Glad you got the roaches in OK. Some people think I reply to these ads to stir up business, but I really sell roaches because I know how much they help people. Every insect eating animal I have found loves them. I love this banner add for the 2005 NARB show. It shows a Nephrurus amyae which is one of the rarest and hardest geckos to get and breed. People always have trouble getting the babies to eat, but every single one I've hatched has eaten roaches right after first shed. My site has lots of good info under the Help & Support section. You can email me with question anytime. I am working on individual care sheets for each species.

I think you're in California right? This guy at a Reptile Pet Shop told me that shipping roaches to/in California was illegal. He said that "Fish and Games" had confiscated roaches from reptile shows in CA. Have you heard of this? I've been thinking of switching to roaches for some time now.
