Lots of us have different styles of keeping breeders. Read back thru the posts and you will find a lot of information. Rats are very hardy little buggers, it's hard to go wrong, once you get the basics down.

I used to keep 1 male and 3 females per group. Sometimes 1,2 if I was trying to slow down or 1,4 to speed up production. I used cement mixing tubs with lids made from 1X2s and 1/2" hardware cloth, and a feed basket that came down thru the top. I have used both water bottles and automatic watering, the later was easier, but not that much as I only kept a couple of tubs. For bedding, I have used pine shavings, aspen shavings, alfalfa hay and alfalfa (rabbit) pellets. They all work. The most important issue is dust. Almost all bedding has dust (don't know about carefresh type products) to some degree, but it is a health issue for rats and humans. My favorite was alfalfa pellets, because I composted it and put it in my garden.
