Our first clutch of the season......

Will Leary Mar 02, 2005 10:03 PM

Our first clutch of the season arrived on 3/02/05. This is a joint project between us and Yasser Moustafa & Cheyanne Day of Spitfire Reptiles. It is the result of breeding one of our Red Hypo Jaguars (RR071-NICM) to one of their beautiful Irian Jaya/West Paupan Carpets (Jenna). This is the first of many steps needed to establish the Jaguar mutation into the Irian Jaya subspecies, which offers the Jaguar project a potentially smaller adult size, and a new pallet of colors and genetics to work with.

That clutch came early! How many eggs did you get from her. Did you cross any other types of morelia with Jags? I understand if you don't wan't to spill the beans.

I'm sure some people will be debating about these crosses for awhile but I think the outcome will produce amazing offspring that will get better with each generation eventually leading to all sorts of designer Jags.

Thanks, Jaremy! However, "early" is not the term I would use to describe this clutch. I waited 36 days between the pre-lay shed and oviposition!!!! LOL. I suppose there are between 15 & 18 eggs, all of which appear to be perfect (no slugs). This is in fact the only cross we attempted. And yes, I'm sure some people will debate about the crosses, and that's okay. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. We felt that expanding the Jaguar morph into some of the different Carpet subspecies was not only inevitable, but also key part in unlocking more of it's potential.

Great idea guys and congratulations! What do you expect the max size to be in the adults?...and when crossing two such distinctly colored snakes is there a rule of thumb in regards to who has the more dominant genetic traits ,for example generally the male or female or is it on a case by case basis based on the individual animal? Very interesting stuff...I continue to be amazed at the advancement in the Herp industry since I was a kid dreaming about Dinosaurs...can't wait to see what you guys come up with next! Thanks for making it fun!

Hello Adam!

It's difficult to say with any certainty just how much this will cut down the size of the 1st generation offspring, but I'm sure the further you breed the Irian Jaguars back into pure Irians, the smaller (or more Irian sized) they will become.

Regarding the color, I'd say previous Irian Jaguar breeding have produced consistently lighter animals. I supose the better person to ask would be Soeren at Precision Reptiles (Germany). He has produced numerous clutches of these crosses over the past two yrs or so.

Will...
Thanks for getting back to me and answering my questions.Great stuff ...can't wait to see the hatchlings! Just exchanged messages w/ Matt Brock..his 03 CVR (Hope ) is gorgeous! Gives me hope that my 03 CVR will be a late bloomer and once I get her switched to rats hopefully I can put a little size on her.It is not easy finding rat pups in N.Y.C. and my wife will feed me to one of my snakes before she lets me keep Frozens in the fridge!Any suggestions would be appreciated, otherwise I look forward to seeing what crazy project you think up next and eventually I will come lookin for a Jag!Thanks again and best of luck!

Congrats. That looks like it will be an interesting combination. You've got some awesome animals. Hopefully I can afford a jag from you soon.
