What should I get?

nez02 Mar 03, 2005 02:03 AM

My good friends Veiled Chameleon died about a month ago and he lent me his cage. Im not sure how much I should expect to pay for another veiled chameleon. I was also wondering if there were any other lizards that would live in the same enviroment as the Veiled.

Thanks for the help.

If I were you I would definitely *NOT* get a chameleon. Wait
until you have a bit more experience caring for lizards in
captivity before seriously considering getting a chameleon.
They are an easily stressed lizard compared to other species
of lizards kept in captivity and all too often can and will
die shortly after a novice hobbyist purchases one of them. I
suspect your friend found this out the hard way.
A Veiled Chameleon is endemic (comes from) to the
mountainous areas of Yemen and Saudi Arabia. A Veiled
Chameleon lives in the wild in a lush humid environment, and
yes, that's in Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
They like a nighttime temperature of 65-68 degrees Fahrenheit
and a daytime temperature of 72-78 degrees Fahrenheit. Although
few Veiled Chameleons will make use of it, a basking area with
a temperature of about 86-90 degrees Fahrenheit is recommended.
Given those basic guidelines the type of lizard you might
want to consider getting should be from the same type of lush
mountainous slopes type of environment. What that means is that
you want a lizard that lives in the wild in a Woodland Forest
type of area with plenty of greenery and significant humidity.
Some of the lizards that fall into that category that you
might consider are the Anole, Day Geckos(called Day because
many other Geckos species are nocturnal (nighttime) lizards)
or Emerald Tree Monitors. Domestic Green Anoles are the least
expensive up front ($5.00 each) but do require proper UVA and
UVB lighting and sometimes special heating and a fairly high
level of humidity in captivity.
Day Geckos are quite popular amoung hobbyists and are not all
that expensive to buy but again they will require additional
costs to provide them a proper environment in captivity.
Emerald Tree Monitors are quite a bit more expensive and not
nearly as readily available in the pet trade. All that said, I
wouldsuggest either a Day Gecko or a an Anole. Certainly there
are other lizards that you could house depending on the
specific tank and accessories you got from your friend, but
those are two of the lizards you might want to consider. Hope
that helps. Good luck.
