Question for anyone who has bred FBT

waldo Jul 08, 2003 10:32 AM

I would like to breed my FBT but so far nothing has happened,I hear the male call at night but only for a few seconds then he is done.Do I need to keep there water warm or is cooler better? Its probably around 65*F right now. What about light?longer or shorter days to encourage breeding?Any advice would be great,I have a local petstore who wants me to breed FBT for them. Thanks

Well, Waldo..I'm no expert just that luck was on my side as a kid who had a pair that gave me several clutches amounting to 700 eggs over one season. Prolific guys! Offering CB FBTs are a great way to conserve the ones that are still being WC. Make sure you have a (sorry this is going to sound stupid) male and a female. You have one calling, but are you sure the other is a female? A change of temp helps to stimulate breeding(going from a cooler ambient temp to a warmer temp). Mine seemed to respond to me spraying the tank 4-5 times a day(guess it sort of imitated greater rainfall). Make sure you have at least 5 inches of water level(they flip over and over when they lay the eggs so they need that vertical space-it looks like synchronised swimmers hooked together doing a flip at the end of the pool to go the opposite way). The following are ideas/guesses that have entered my mind(its not based on experience with FBTs, but based on other info I've gathered for other types of frogs): Feed them a lot. In nature, the parents have to have all their needs met(be comfy) and see that their young would have their needs met. Their season coincides with when insects are most abundant. I've heard of playing a tape with mating calling to induce some competitiveness to breed. Longer daylight will probably simulate the longer days as weather warms. Some frogs will be stimulated by changing pressure(as in a storm coming). Some of my other frogs respond with calling after I have turned a fan on to circulate the air. Good froggin' to you and let us know how your venture goes!
