Snake in North Carolina

mysterysnake Mar 03, 2005 10:07 AM

i found a little snake slithering about in my grass one day as i was mowing the lawn, it has dark red base with brown/black stripes down the length of its back. its only about a foot long and ONLY eats earth worms. i assumed it was a corn snake but i cant find any pics of snakes that look similar. ANYBODY HAVE A CLUE?

Couldn't be a corn. They are not striped (from the wild) & do not eat earthworms. Most likely candidate is Storeria o.occipitomaculata, the northern red-bellied snake.

Whereabouts in NC do you live? Im in Va and I'd like to see it if you live close to the eastern shore.

Your description was a tad off. The red-bellied & the brown are different species of the same genus.
