Sealing Plywood Cage

ronfinney Jul 08, 2003 10:42 AM

I am in the process of building a plywood cage with screen on three sides for my chameleon and was wondering what types of sealant will work to make the wood water resistant. Will a polyurethene work and if so, water based should be used not oil based right? Thanks for any help

If I were you, no matter what I covered it with {oil} I would staple or glue black plastic to seal it. That is just my opinion dude.

I like to use deck sealer for wood cages. It does a good job getting into the pours of the wood and keeping water from causing bacteria outbreaks. If there is a lot of wood exposer in the cage, I would look a little closer at the toxicity of the sealers residue. You don't want a cham to drink off of the wood part of the cage, and get poisoned. Most sealers will work fine if you wait for it to completely cure before introducing chameleons to them. I think this topic needs to be explored a little further.
