Hmm... which one do you like better?

crtoon83 Mar 03, 2005 01:22 PM

I was just contemplating getting another black rat snake, and I am torn between two.

One is an orange albino that was hatched in '04 for $100. The other would be a grape albino that will (hopefully) hatch this summer, price not yet set. I put some pics that Mike Joliff compiled below to show the differences. Any opinions?

I was REALLY stoked about the grape albino when I saw it. I have NO idea whats going on genetically, but I really dig the color contrast in it.
Were I you....I'd hold out for the grape.
If I werent already loaded with enough ratsnakes right now, I'd have my sights set on those guys.

Great post. One morph that I am not seeing is the dark brown colored Black Rat Snake. I have found these in the wild on the East Coast (outside of Richmond Va.) They are a natural morph that I never see in members posts.

Graet pictures!!!

I'd be interested to see that morph myself. I live only an hour south of Richmond. Maybe we can get up sometime and go herping!

I'd like to see the brownish morph as well.Nearly all I see in and around Richmond are the deep glossy blacks, with just a few retaining hints of their juvie pattern.
I DID see one a few years ago ,in Hanover, with faint reddish stripes. Kinda wish the landowner hadn't requested I leave him there

Almost all of the Black rats I've seen around Richmond and the surrounding counties have ended up becoming a pretty solid black with just a little white showing through around the scales and the white chin and belly markings. Which is fine for me because I like Black rat snakes that are actually black . Just a preference I guess. I've kept albinos (they can be really impressive looking snakes with the coral pink and white fading pattern) and greenish intergrades, but a regular old VA Black snake is still my favorite. I am interested in all the different appearences with the morphs, but I'm very happy to see a normal dark Black rat snake out in the woods around here.
