Question about a possible resp. infection...

ThruDaRoof Mar 03, 2005 03:32 PM

I think my bp may have a resp. infection but i can't find any vets around where I live that know enough about reptiles to take them to. Its only got a faint weez, but it's had it for a while now. It seems to be more noticeable when it is active and moves around than when it just rests in place. If this is a resp. infection, what can I do to get rid of it seeing as I can't find a vet to take it to?

If you've caught it early enough you may be able to fight it off by raising your ambient temps and lowering your humidity. In the mean time try to find a herp vet, he may need anitbiotics. If you notice mucus then it's definately time to get it to a vet. Hope this helps.

There is no mucus yet, hopefully there will never be. I'll keep trying to find a herp vet around here (Springfield, MO). If I can't find one here, I'll look again when I move out to Lake Havasu, AZ in June. Thanks for your help.

You may want to find your local herpetological society (google works great for this) usually they can point you in the right direction or look under their member list and start calling around, someone around you will probably have a vet you can take it to.

I live in KC MO, but I don't think you'd want to come all the way up here to get your Ball treated, when theres a chance there are some in Springfield. One of my Balls had a resperatory infection a few months ago. Another one that had it passed away because the doctor didn't "get to her in time." (pissed me off)

What you could do, is set a heat lamp up a foot off the surface of the table, put a 50 or 60 watt bulb in it, and lay the snake on the table with it. What my BP did (he had a resp. infection) was he raised his head until it was 3-4 inches off the table towards the light and heat. I'd just let him stay like that for a while, it seemed to help my BP out.

Watch for weezing, clicking noises, mucas, and the elevated head. Like Tosha said, raise the temps. Get him/her to a vet ASAP. If you catch it quick, then it should be fine. If you catch it late...

Good luck.

Hope it helped,

Ryan
