Nelsons are not hard to keep at all, and they will never need a 30 gallon tank. If this is your first snake, I'd recommend a corn or a Cal. King. Both are very easy and very hardy snakes. There are so many morphs available and you should be able to find something that catches your eye. Florida Kings are also very hardy...a personal favorite of mine. They will get slightly larger (up to 5 feet or so), and of the above snakes, are the only ones that would ever need a 30 gallon tank.

I personally like ball pythons. If you get a male it probably won't get any bigger than 4ft. Very easy to care for. They are slow moving snakes also witch appealed to me. I now have a male and a female. Females get bigger than the males. I wouldn't trade them for anything.

I keep my adult honduran milksnakes in 30 gallon tanks. They grow to be 4-5 feet long and are awesome in colors, temperament, and very easy to take care of. Check them out.
