Got a question for all the people who owns satanics

sunfox Mar 03, 2005 06:19 PM

How long is the acclimation period for these guys? I've had them since Sunday and they haven't eaten yet. Am I expecting too much this soon? I've got the temps and humidity set up perfectly and am currently working on making a misting system set on timers.
Also, my female satanic is looking on the chubby side and has just shed yesterday. I saw her walking around the floor of her tank last night. Is this considered unusual behaviour?
My male has been keeping to himself lately, he doesn't venture out much.
They've got lots of cover and plenty of places to hide (so much so that I can't find them sometimes).

Thanks for all your help, I'm still pretty new at this whole gecko thing. They are the complete opposite of my uromastyx.

Thats way too short to think they are acclimated...

Give them atleast a month. And don't handle them too much, that stresses them out.

yes, i would definitely say that it takes a month, possibly more depending on the beginning state of your gecko. as for your female, if she really looks round and fat, and you continue to see her roaming the bottom, keep a close eye out for eggs. its not too uncommon for recent imports to come in gravid. most of the time they dont bury the eggs, but they can hide them real good if you arent ready for it. i would suggest adding some dried moss fiber under some foliage and keep an eye on it. my first female actually buried one egg from a clutch, the other was laid on top of the substrate (luckily for me i decided to dig after finding only a single egg!).

I wanted to make sure their home would be perfect for them, even if that means that I can't always see them. I've seen great results with my uromastyx when they have access to a burrow (albeit an artificial one) where they are completely out of my sight and reach. My goal is for them [satanics] to be as comfortable and happy as possible (as I am sure they miss their home in Madagascar).
My female has taken up residence between 2 pieces of corkbark. I'll watch to see if she wanders out skinner than when she went in.
I've got pinhead crickets and a few waxworms available for them if they decide they're hungry.
Is there anything else I can do to make their new home even cozier?

Thanks

Hi Sunfox,

Pinheads are too small for full sized phants. Get some 1/4" or so crickets, turn off their lights at night, and about an hour later, quietly toss a few crickets into their cage. If you want to watch, get about a 25 watt red bulb - that's what I use with mine, and it doesn't seem to distract them from hunting (and mine are fresh WC). Good luck!

yes, definitely move them up to crix larger than pinheads. pinheads are only a suitable size for hatchlings, in my opinion.

I've tried both pinhead and 1 week old for my hatchlings. They seem to do better with the 1 week old crix.

I feed my adults 3 week old cricx without any problems. Gutload the crix with some leafy greens and a roach chow. Seems to work well.

Anywho cheers...

Thanks everybody for being so nice and patient with me. I've been to other forums where the newbies are flamed for everything they do. Needless to say I didn't stay very long and certainly didn't post anything. This forum is great and you are all really great people
Now I can say that I enjoy both Uro forums (uromastyx and uroplatus)
