How often does everyone change their substrates?

crtoon83 Mar 03, 2005 07:59 PM

And what kind of substrate are you using? I'm in the middle of an argument over on another website because these people are saying it needs to be completely changed out every 7-30 days! For nenoate corns! I just want some support on my side... lol...

I use aspen and orchid bark for different things. I scoop the poop in the orchid bark and top off the amount from time to time, but dont do a total clean out but maybe every 4-5 months or so. They advertise you can "wash and reuse" but I dont know anyone who actually does that. Depends on if the uric acid has gotten crusty on the bottom of the tank. Aspen bedding I'll swap out more often just because of moisture in the air here gets it kinda nasty after about 2 months or so.

I use aspen bedding, and use toilet paper to scoop up all the waste in one big handful, making sure I get all the wet bedding out. I flush the whole mess down the toilet. I do this as needed, I have 10 snakes, and check them almost daily. Once every 3 months I use my shop vac to remove all the aspen bedding and then spray Quadricide, a cleaner I got from Big Apple and wipe everything spotless. This has been working for me for years.
