How often does everyone change their substrates?

crtoon83 Mar 03, 2005 08:59 PM

And what kind of substrate are you using? I'm in the middle of an argument over on another website because these people are saying it needs to be completely changed out every 7-30 days! For nenoate corns! I just want some support on my side... lol...

I was thinking about this question recently, and realized that there are no simple answers other than: Change it when it needs to be changed. There are so many variables, such as: Size of snake(s) compared to size of tank. Season makes a difference...I let mine go months in the winter when my snakes are eating sparingly. Amount of substrate used. Proper spot-cleaning. Feeding habits and subsequent crapping habits of the snake in question. And whether or not the snake gets into his damn water bown and manages to empty the thing out, therefore soaking the aspen!

If you cram a bunch of neonate corns into a tiny little container...Sure, you will need to change the bedding every few weeks. On the other hand, one neonate in a spacious cage could go for a few months if enough substrate is being used and spot-cleaning is done regularly. I use aspen and spot clean, removing the feces AND surrounding area. I start out with an abundance of substrate, and clean the tank completety when I am starting to run out of aspen. Or...When a big, fat ratsnake who eats and craps like a pig messes the place up in just a few short weeks. Duffy
