What size food item?

althea Mar 03, 2005 11:34 PM

All four of my kunishir island rat snakes ate--it usually doesn't happen all on the same night. However, it was rather peculiar. My 0.2 '03 refused both fuzzy mice and pink rats again for the third time in as many weeks. However, as I was putting one back into her enclosure, she snagged a pink mouse from a dish on top of the enclosure next to hers. She devoured six of them before indicating that she was full.

As an experiment, I put pinks, fuzzies and pink rats on a dish for her sister. Once again the larger items were ignored, and this one ate 5 pink mice. My 1.1 '04 babies, on the other hand, immediately grabbed fuzzy mice as their meals of choice. They rarely, if ever, refuse a meal of any size. Go figure!

They all shed recently, and it's awesome to watch them become more and more turquoise. I look forward to them being full-grown, yet am enjoying them immensely as they mature. All seem to prefer hanging from my hand/wrist, and eating their meals in mid-air--something no other animal in my collection does. They are alert and personable with great temperaments.

Thank you to Thomas Harrison and Rick Cunningham for offering such incredible animals! I'll post some pics when I get the chance.

regards,
althea

Well, my '04 hatchlings, just out of burmation, are pounding fuzzies every meal. '04 was my first year breeding this species so I can't be sure how they will be in the coming years. My adults come out of brumation and eat small/medium rats all summer long untill they go down again for the winter. The way they were after hatching made me wonder in they were ever going to start eating. So I just gave them a good hibernation and that got the ball rolling. Now they are all mouth it would seem...lol Good choice on Kunasirs though...beautiful species!

Conrad,
Thanks for the response. My '04 babies are pounding the fuzzies, and my '03 juvies reluctantly ate pink rats this time around. My North American colubrids are coming out of brumation and DEMANDING food. So, there are more food smells around the herp room, which may have thrown the kuni rats off a bit. None of my kuni rats showed any interest in brumating this year, and ate fairly consistently all winter...until a few weeks ago. Hopefully all are back on schedule now!

regards,
althea
