Snakes being KILLED on "SURVIVOR"

mandk Mar 04, 2005 12:54 AM

I was watching survivor tonight and honestly got sick to my stomach after seeing what they did. a few of the contestants decided to go fishing and came upon some banded sea kraits...well they thought the snakes would be great food and decided to cut the heads off the snakes and eat them, BUT...they decided to use the snakes dead bodies as bait to lure in sharks closer to shore so they could "TRY" to kill the sharks with tree limbs..those snakes were kiled for no reason....I am wondering if any laws were broke by them killing those snakes
P.S. I will NEVER watch survivor again

well , if you have chances are you have used bait .. and if you have used bait then you have used another dead animal . where is the difference here ? i mean , i disagree killing an animal for no reason . but if they were gonna use it for bait then they have just as much right to do this as one has the right to catch shrimp or any other fish to use for bait .. oh no but wait .. its ok to use fish or shrimp .. but it isnt ok to use another snake just cause its the animal "WE" preffer ?? c'mon now .. arent we taking it to an extreme ?

If you were trapped on an island for weeks with no food and came across potential food(even if its a snake)and ur starving what would you do? You could just say hey I'm starving but I'm gona leave the only food I've seen alone and go back to camp with nothing. I am completely against the killing of animals for needless reasons but I'm not against trying not to starve to death and if that means you have to kill a few animals to try and catch a bigger animal for food so the whole camp can eat then so be it.

I gotta agree with the other two the show is about survival. I can tell ya from some of my military training that there were times during training that there were some insects and other things I would never have considered that looked rather apealing. You couldnt understand till your in that position. Regaurdless they didnt kill it just because it was a snake.

Don't wanna wait 'til tomorrow Why put it off another day? One by one, little problems Build up, and stand in our way. Oh One step ahead, one step behind it Now ya gotta run to get even Make future plans I'll dream about yesterday, hey! Come on turn, turn this thing around (Right now) Hey! It's your tomorrow (Right now) Come on, it's everything (Right now) Catch your magic moment (Right now) Catch your magic moment Do it right here and now Do it right here and now, IT MEANS EVERYTHING (Van Halen, Right Now)

So am I still waiting for this world to stop hating/Can't find a good reason, can't find hope to believe in/...You can't change the state of the nation we just need/ some motivation...So am I still waiting for this world to stop hating(Sum41 Still Waiting)

I believe the above threads are missing the point of the orginating post's disgust. The show is not a real surival situation, but a deliberately contrived one and unlike training in the military is it does serve no good purpose, just the rather jaded licentious tastes of others for their amusement.
I am not a big fan of reality television for the reason it is very reminiscent of the ancient romen coliseum even though it stops just short of murder and torture, its underlying principal seems to be little more than sadism to entertain others. I have no doubt that at least some of the people who produce or watch these shows would quite happily watch people or animals tortured or killed if they thought they could get away with it.

Since I watch survivor I think you just ridiculed me.

As far as I am concerned if you need to eat - kill the snakes. It doesn't make any difference whether it's for bait or the pot. Unless your a vegan, which I am sure Mr Wrinkle is, then you can't complain. I bet there's a chicken forum out there somewhere complaining that we eat chickens...before they are born even.
Before wrinkle gets a total crease I know the point was the Survivor is contrived. But after it starts it is just that - survival. If you can't find food you have a tough time surviving.

Your a bit naive if you think they are going to let these people come to harm by starving or dehydrating. They would get their pants sued off them no matter what agreements were signed beforehand. Its still contrived and unnecessary which means animals don't need to die just to amuse the people watching. As to the rest of your response, I eat to live not to entertain others.

That would be a REAL Survivor episode!

If you were stuck on an island with no food and dinner swam right by you would you kill it or starve? If you killed it and while you were cleaning it a bigger and better meal presented itself would you give up your catch to try to get the better one? They chop the heads off of most of the animals we buy in the stores to eat. There isn't much of a difference. Being a former military guy I thought it was good survival skill. They teach our troops to catch kill and skin wild rabbits, squirrels and whatever walks buy. I thought it was cruel to show it on TV, but if that was the only protien around I'd be swinging that axe too.

I will fully admit that I do NOT watch Survivor but people I work with do. They are not even reptile lovers but had to come in to work and tell me that I would have hated the show that night because they killed a bunch of snakes for no real reason. My friends didn't even know what kind of snake they were. I have no problem killing animals if it means you will die if you don't eat them but it sounds to me like that was just a producer stunt for shock value and ratings. Give me a break! Those people are not going to starve to death. If those people would just get dumped on an island with no games to win supplies and such I might watch. Just stick some cameras up in trees with remote control and take the people off one by one when they cry uncle. Make them really survive. Now that would be REALITY TV.
