Miracle Grow Soil

small_town36 Mar 04, 2005 07:25 AM

Is it alright to use miracle grow and a normal no additive potting soil mix in the plants for the cham. Or should I just be using the no additive soil. I am currently using no additives on my hibiscus and the leaves toward the botttom of the plant are starting to turn yellow. Does any one know if a little mixture of miracle grow can be used say 30% miracle and 70% no additive or can i even use more?

I will be posting pictures of my new chameleon jungle that I am setting up tonight. I have 1/3 of my big room transformed into a chameleon haven. Vines hanging infront of windows and down the window trim I got a fake ficus, a real spider plant, hibiscus and draecena. I also and using some bend a branch as well I will post pics soon

the setup sounds great - can't wait to see!

All plants get yellow leaves and with hibiscus the lower leaves die first b/c they are the oldest If all are turning yellow, browning at the edge or other symptoms then there is a deeper problem, but ocassional yellow leaves are normal. If you recently repotted it you may have more for a while; this is due to shock (yes, plants go into shock when repotted), root damage, excess water, general adjustment.

I personally would opt for an organic fertilizer. You can get liquid seaweed fert. and others (see link below). Or, if you compost for your regular garden or have a neighbor who does, you can use that (or you can buy small bags of compost at a nursery). In order to have firm leaves, strong stems and many flowers you want a fertilzer with a low phosphorous value -you know how all ferts have numbers like: 5-5-5 or 10-20-10? That stands for the N(Nitrogen)-P(Phosphorous)-K(Potassium) ratios. Hibiscus require 20-10-20 for best growth. If you feel you must use miracle grow make it a weak solution, but look into organic since your cham will be eating the leaves and flowers.

Here is a link for one...
