Question(s) from a future breeder...

LoneGreyWolf20 Mar 04, 2005 09:18 AM

I am thinking about getting into breeding Boas. Mainly Boa Constrictor Imperator. I was wondering what the max age you would breed a female is? Also I am looking at buying a 100% het for Albino male in a few days and in a couple months purchasing a 100% het for Albino female. Is it ok to just have one male and one female pair? I remember from years ago someone telling me that you are better off having 3 or 4 females and one male if you want to breed. Is this the better way of doing it? Has anyone ever just used one male and one female with some success? Also, what's the earliest you can breed with snakes age wise? The male het that I am getting is of the Kahl strain. Would you go to a different breeder for your female? There is alot of information out there and it's pretty overwhelming, I was hoping to get some answers from you guys though to add to the pot so to speak.

Thanks in advance,
DJ

Don't make the mistake of powerfeeding your boas to make them huge. Just because they are big doesn't not make them great breeders. I'd say after 3-4 four years of a properly fed snake you could attempt breeding. 1 male and 1 female are fine. Some folks have had luck breeding many females with just one male. Also, some people believe that the more animals that are available will stimulate more breeding behavior. And yes, you should try to get an unrelated pair. Also, a word of advice on hets. Be sure that you are working with a reputable breeder. Just because they say it is a het does not necessary prove that it is. A reputable breeder should have no problem showing you the parents...that way you know youre buying a het and not just your everyday BCI. Hope that helps

I would agree with the above post. The only think i want to add is for you to do your research on the breeder of the 100% het Kahl. Make sure that the genetics of the animal is promised by the breeder and that the animal is in good health. A female should be 3-4 years of age before breed, although it could breed earlier you are then risking the health of the female and decreasing her life expectancy. For males you can breed them as young as 18 months but i find they do better at about 24 months. Just seem to have a little more energy and a little more excited about the whole experiance. Once you get into these animals though you will learn that every day needs to be a learning experiance. And the more you learn the more healthy and happy your animals will be. It is a journey. Enjoy and keep the questions coming...

Very nice choice. It is hard to find a better breeder. Rich Ihle is one of the top dogs in the game. You should have a very good experience, good luck.
