Naja kaouthia suphanensis X Naja kaouthia (albino) Hybrid

kaouthiakeeper Mar 04, 2005 12:16 PM

Hello,

I have a cb. 04' male albino Naja kaouthia. I am planning to get a cb 04' female Naja kaouthia suphanensis and willing to try a hybrid project in the future. I don't know if anyone ever tried this before but as Suphan Cobra is an island form of Monocled Cobra, it should work.

What do you think?

Thanks;
Ciga

It is very likely that it would "work" in the sense that they are genetically compatible. I believe N. atra has been hybridized with N. kaouthia before and it resulted in viable offspring. Most likely, the vast majority of Naja are genetically compatible. Being that suphans and monocleds are the same species almost ensures that not only will the offspring survive, but probably also be fertile. The risk with crossing two snakes that have cannibalistic tendencies, be they the same species or not, is always the fact that one, usually the larger, may view the smaller as a better meal than mate. As long as you keep a close eye on them, at least initially, and make sure that they are getting intimate rather than getting ready to eat, things should go well. Just be sure both snakes are properly cycled and in good condition.

Good luck. I believe a cross between these two would be very interesting looking snakes for sure. They would probably be some sort of aberrant colored monocled het for albino, but only the actual experiment will tell for sure. You would also likely get a wide array of different appearances in the clutch.

Just a warning: a lot of people here and elsewhere detest the idea of hybrids (even within the same species), so be ready for some not-so-nice answers sometimes when you ask questions about them. I personally see hybrids and intergrades as very interesting looking snakes, and along the same lines as any morph in helping to keep things interesting. I'm of course not saying that the true species aren't interesting, but herpetoculture wouldn't be anywhere near where it is today without the morphs and hybrids to keep people excited about it. Anyway, that's my rant. Be safe.
