Egyptians after a brief brumation

artgeckko Mar 04, 2005 04:45 PM

Hey all-
Just wanted to show the sizes these guys are getting up to.
My females seem to have slowed to the 20" mark, but the males seem to put on an inch plus every year. Seems that they get bigger and bigger while they sleep. Maybe they just appear that way. All seem well and anxious(if you know what I mean) now.
Thor show below is about 22"

But he just thrashed my arm with his tail!

artgeckko Mar 04, 2005 04:56 PM

Had one scare in the last few months-
Cannot be sure what happened to my longest Uro grover-
I know he ate almost a whole package of algae discs-I left them on the floor after feeding my Koi....doubtful they are very good for him.
Well about a week later he ws noticably lethargic.
Two days later - Black (which looked like blood) runny stools
and vomit.
Next day Vet-$300
Later and a vast assortment of Antibiotics and prayers.
He seems to have recovered.
That said, he now has developed blisters along his back, legs and tail. Outside of that he appears fine.
I am bringing him into the vet next week (when I get a day off) And try to figure what is causing the recent skin issue.
Here is some shots of him

Really, you're only sticking with "palm-sized" reptiles?

I'm looking foward to getting mine because I'm going to buy it a dog bed and let it sit out like a dog. I'm going to name it Fido.......or maybe something else like Zeus or Mars.

>>Really, you're only sticking with "palm-sized" reptiles?

Absolutely. Especially as I was trying to feed my male ocellated dewormer today. He's a frisky bugger and the name "Iago" may soon attach itself for all his evil intentions.
"It's okay honey, it may be huge but it won't bite your nose off like a monkey..."
It's probably a Southern-California induced space paranoia thing, but I can stack multiple cages for small critters and I can experience satisfaction through accumulated mass. That.... well... "spare room" sounds about right and that we don't have.

Trust me, no one knows the term "cramped" like I do.

My room's 9ft x 9ft and space is very limited.

This summer I plan on building 5-8 new enclosures for all the reptiles we currently have. Most of them will be 4 feet in length, 3 ft in width, and about 4 feet in height.

One will be different in size. It will be about 5-6 feet long, 4-5 feet wide and about 4 1/2 feet high because it will be housing the Egyptian Uro I plan on getting (from lindsay pike) sometime in July or August if his egyptian uro's "get down".

You have quite a menagerie!
I wcommend anybody that has taken on that much responsibility.
What a sickness/addiction we all share.....
I have a 12 x 12 room that they all live in-separate from the rest of my house.
Only thing is in the summer it is like 120F in there and takes forever to cool down......
Good luck getting your Uro from Lindsay-Oscar(my first) came from Lindsay. What a great help he was getting me started!

Well I have Ares my mali uro, Hades my bearded dragon and Kalypso my leopard gecko, that I bought and take full care of.

My brother has Apollo-mali uro, Draco-bearded dragon, Sid Vicious-Tokay Gecko and Peter Parker-Tarantula. I also take care of all of his because he's lazy.

I'm going to be building enclosures for Ares, Apollo, Draco, Hades and the Egyptian I will be getting this summer (hopefully).

My oldest brother is supposed to be moving to Chicago this summer (not the one with the animals, but another one, I have 2 brothers). So if he does I'll talk with my parents about just making my room a reptile Only room. I'd then take his room, it's a little bigger, but the problem is those little lady bug things come in by the dozens in his room.

Any thing is possible-
I did think that because wheni had taken antibiotics in the past I do believe there was a light sensitivity problem?
Hopefully next Wednesday I will know.....

It could be blister disease which is a bacterial infection.
It's a good thing you are working with your vet as it can progress and lead to sepsis. On the uromastyx's home page, there is an article by Randall Gray which has a few short sentences about blister disease:

"Excessive humidity can possibly cause blister disease which is often observed on newly acquired specimens of Uromastyx. These blisters can become secondarily infected by bacteria. Many wild caught specimens of Uromastyx are often soaked to hydrate them after long periods in transport following removal from the wild. This may lead to blister disease if done excessively. In addition, high sugar solutions such as Gatoradeâ are used which can leave a residue of sugar on the skin therefore providing a medium for bacteria to grow on (Dr. Greg Moore, personal communication)."

Hope he makes a quick recovery.

Pam-
Thank you so much for this post.
My vet seems very knowledgable, but to his own admission-I do not see to many of these guys(uromastyx).
So all the knowledge and references are appreciated!
Thanks
Ed

SUPER nice as always. Getting very big. My Cleo is about 20 inches now too. If not more, I have to measure her.

I hope your guy with the blisters, has them clear up soon and is himself again. Sounds as if you have been through alot with him lately.
They get like doggies,(especially these BIG ones, I sure understand that, ya hate to see them sick

Let us know how you make out at the Vet next week. Interesting to find out what is causing the problem.

**You know there is something called Blister disease, like a bacterial infection.

Or maybe the medicines just had an adverse effect on him.

Hey-
I am hoping that it is something to do with medicines as opposed to a fungal infection.
It seems to scar the tissue once it heals but never seems to disappear completely.
See what the doctor says-
I have read the post on Blister disease- do you know of more references?
Thanks-
Ed

My best to Cleo-

Well I had only posted it the other night because I had heard of someone elses lizards getting it , last year.

Its more common in iguanas, but many snakes get it also.
Seems to come from an environment that is way to moist, or dirty. And is like a bacterial infection.

But since we all know you take great care of your lizards, I would think more, of the too moist, which can be a Big culprit.

**I'm also wondering, if you could just try a warm soak in
providine/iodine solution, as I used this when My Cleo had 3d degree burns, to keep her back from becoming infected.

You will have to see what the Vet thinks !

Yeah that's whai read as well-The moist and dirty conditions.
I tore apart his hide to see if there waas anything wrong with the inside-seemed dry and okay...
Took the time to overhaul everybodys cage and replace the sand.
I'll keep you posted.
