too hot?

mkurgan Jul 08, 2003 11:58 AM

is it possible for the basking spot to be too hot. i originally bought a 150w bulb and it was too hot. i then got a 100w, and it got up to 125, i just went back and got a 75w bulbs and hoping this will be fine.

also, what kind of dome fixtures do people use. mine say "up to 150watts 'type A' bulbs or smaller" is a basking bulb a type A?

Just wanted to add, was not sure if you were buying bulbs at the pet store or not, but if it's just for heat a regular house bulb is fine. I know those pet store bulbs are high priced. Did you choose to use the strip lights for UVB?

Yes it can be too hot. If it goes up past 120 it's getting dangerouse, there is a fine line between the right temps of 105-110 and unsafe temps. I suggest a digital thermometer with a probe and put it right at the basking spot to monitor that. Just make sure they got a shafed spot if they want to retreat, or cool down a bit. Good Luck with the new baby.

yes i am buying the bulbs from the pet store. i got a zoo-med bulb(75 watts). right now on the sand, it is 110 degrees, so when i put the rocks in(tomrow with the dragons) it will be closer to the bulb, and around 115. should i drop it down again maybe to a 50 watt? my babIES will be here tomrrow, im so excited

Bummer!! when the light shines on the rock it should get even hotter. This is the tricky part setting up the cage for them, and expecially the temps. Like I said buy the house bulbs for heat same exact thing, save the 3-4 bucks. You can get four for the same price as one. I know they sell 60 watt bulbs too. Good Luck tomorrow when they come, I hope they are fine living with each other. Are you keeping them in the same tank? Did you choose a pair or two females? Might have to split a pair up in the future when the male gets mature, or he'll breed with her too young. I suggest 18 months to breed, just an opinion. One that I got when I first got into dragons, was told it was good to wait until fully grown. Some are done growing at a year some like mine are a year and still getting bigger. Got one male now that is 22 inches, and weighs 702 grams. He's huge one of the biggest I've seen. But some people do choose to breed earlier then that. Bearded dragons are awesome, and can be addicting.lol. I got two new babies this week total of 8 dragons, will post pics tonight of the new ones. My big male foster, and others are pictured below hit PHOTOS if you would like to see them.

Just put it in the dome and your set. Same heat as a reptile bulb.
