Question for Chris H

Hey Chris I was reading your post earlier about the rope-light product and I was wondering if you could help me find this product. Not necessarily for purchase just to see what it is you are talking about. Thanks for your help.

He has me interested as well, i believe they have this stuff at lowes, homedepot and such. Chris, how flexable is this stuff (rope lights)? My thought is to run this stuff in plastic conduit, essentially making a radiant grid of sorts. I have my rack in my bedroom, so illumination at night is not a plus. I have seen this plastic (grey) conduit used in exterior below grade applications (electrical). If i'm not mistaken this conduit is thinner walled than the pvc plumbing pipes. What are your thoughts on this one? Also what is the cost per foot? Keep me posted on this. Clint

The inside diameter would have to accommodate the rope lighting. I was thinking the grey conduit because it is already made for electrical applications. Any idea what kind of plastic the drip irrigation tubing is made of? Clint

Clint, I really like the idea of running it in PVC conduit. I image it can be bent to a pretty tight radius as it's coiled pretty tight when you get it. I think if you stretched it out straight and let it warm up for a few days you could then bend it however you wanted. As is it tends to take the shape of the coil it comes in.

I don't remember what I paid per foot. I'd be curious to see how it compares to heat rope from Big Apple, Zoo Med, etc. I may go to Lowes tonight so I'll check.

Here's a link showing it used to heat plastic cages. There are many other pictures on the web showing it used to heat racks, etc.

I did a bit of research and it appears this stuff varies a bit as far as wattage-per-foot. I really don't know what the wattage of mine is yet so maybe the efficieny is not all that impressive.

Also, remember that my room is heated so I'm not asking the rope light to do all that much.
