buy some 6 foot boards (melamine or whatever, buy some framing, a box of wood screws, have a drill handy.

yeah, it takes effort but it is not impossible.

I am in Canada, and a bare bones 8 foot cage, with no castors, or furniture in it yet, costs 220 just for the wood. Once you figure in, screws, sealant, glass, hinges, lights, etc, etc, you are looking at over 300.
Thats just for the empty box. Next is cage furniture!
Cheers. D.

it may be cheap as chips, but it doesn't hold up well under the high humidity levels found in most monitor enclosures. I had a small, temporary cage that I bought in a rush (before I started building my own enclosures) to separate a female monitor that was a shy feeder. Despite my sealing the corners and edges of the enclosure, the humidity of the substrate itself was enough to rot the floor. By the time she was ready to be moved into a new enclosure she had dug a hole right through to the roof of the cage below (the only thing preventing her from escaping).

I'd pay the extra money and go for plywood, then seal it, or use the FRP that many on this forum use.

i tend to agree dk. i was only using it for reference, as in it is not difficult to build things ( i am so not mechanically inclined)

i keep my glaeurti in melamine. i also keep a monacled cobra, bredls and raise ups, it has held up well for me. however, i do imagine that it would be hell if i were to put my dumerils in melamine.

cheers

You could build one. I understand why you wouldnt want to buy cheap stuff, its UGLY! My b-friend and I have priced materials to build an attractive, water resitant cage, with glass sliding doors in front, and it come to roughly $450. 8'X 4'X 6'... Nice finished wood on the outside with imbellishment around the edges for a lovely appearance. Weve built some in the past with minimal funds, but they are never nice enough to display in your living room per-say.
Luckily my b-friend is very handy when it comes to stuff like that! I just draw the designs!

I know a guy who makes beautiful melamine cages(indestructible and heavy), for $325 at 3x3x6 ft, or 3x2x6ft. He can make them bigger also. He can disassemble it in minutes so it will fit through your door then send you on your way. You can build one with the right tools and patience with around $150 plus plexiglas and tracks plus screws and sealant. Email me if you want the contact info.

I built a 6X4 ft. cage a year and a half ago. Could have been 8x4 with the wood I bought. I even had custom plexiglass ordered for the front of it. Hinges, screws, sustrate (cypress mulch). All was about $134. For decor, I found some huge bedrocks that about gave me a hernia!!! (Don't try this at home kids). I also took a hand saw into a wooded area and trimmed off some nice branches off a dead fall tree. Creativity can save you a LOT of money. My only downfall was that the cage was 4 ft tall, which made heating it less efficient.
If you are good with planning, you can even make it sectional, so it can be torn down and stored when not in use anymore.
Hope this helps,
Tim
