What kind of frog is this?

anson Mar 05, 2005 11:28 AM

They were bought from a pet store as tad poles (unknown)
They are now around 2.5 inches snout to vent.
They also get a light metallic copper color on their backs sometimes.

Anson -
You have a Cuban tree frog. They are an invasive species that are spreading northward throughout Florida and have been found as far north as Savannah, Ga. They EAT all of our native frogs, snakes, toads, and baby birds. The females get very large. The skin of their head is fused to their skull so it doesn't move back and forth if you rub their little heads. Also, they are poisonous, so make certain that you wash your hands thoroughly after handling them. I have 7 of them in my classroom. Ordinarily I would never remove any critters from their natural habitat, but these guys are very detrimental to the ecological balance of Florida. Biologists at the U. of Fl. recommend that you destroy them by freezing for several days. I cannot kill anything -- so the next best thing is to make them "educational" frogs and take as good care of them as I can. They get crickets and superworms. gutload the crickets with amphibian vitamins.
Their habitat is a 20 gal. aquarium with potted plants, jacuzzi's (water bowls with aerators), and empty clay pots for hiding. Good luck with your little guy.
