It's almost spring and I have a brumination question??

reptoman Mar 05, 2005 12:56 PM

When we bruminate our animals, we are often concerned about the male having that temp drop so his hormones will be activated so he can breed when spring comes around.....But my question out of curiousity, is if a female is not bruminated will she also not concieve with a ready male that has been bruminated? I guess what I am saying or musing on, is how much of the females dormancy is important to the whole issue. I hven't read much on this with respect to any lizards, I just thought I'd throw this out for conversation.................? Anyone know??

being brumated, Lou. I'm sure most will tell you it does help them to BE brumated, probably better odds of MORE fertile eggs.

But they can certainly lay anyway, I had several hatchlings to prove it.

Brumation does seem to be the way to go for BETTER results.

i have never brumated my lizards. ivan laid eggs last year and milly too. i never did get any to hatch but i did not have an incubator the whole season. the one egg i had a chance with died sometime in incubation because there was a baby in there. ivan just turned gravid again and so did my new girl gertie (milly died so no gravidness for her). the only difference is that gertie was brumated a short time before being shipped to me, so it will be interesting to see how the eggs turn out this year.

i thought you would enjoy that. too bad it was not a lizard doing it if you could create that, it would be the biggest hit on kingsnake.com
