How can i convince my mother to let me get a Ball?

TheDrew1 Mar 05, 2005 05:29 PM

Well, last weekend i thought of a good idea. I was going to sell or trade off a couple of my chameleons ( i breed chameleons right now) and get a pet (im not planning on breeding) ball python. Well she agreed to this but then on thursday monrning she changed her mind and decided she doesnt want a snake in the house. Well at first i was really excited when she said yes because ive been wanting to get a snake for many years and shes never let me. So i was devistated to hear that she changed her mind. over the past couple of days ive been begging and begging but no luck.
But heres my problem, i go to school 8 hours a day then i go to crew practice. I have 4 chameleons and 2 bearded dragons and its very hard to give them the meticulous care i love to give to my animals. So because of my schedule i wanted to downsize and get a snake. I decided on a snake because unlike lizards you dont have to feed them every day or every other day. I also just dont want to get rid of my animals because i love keeping reptiles and i love the responsibilty and challenge they bring me.
So my mother keeps telling me that she just doesnt want a snake in the house. But i dont see what her problem is because i have many lizards and theyre animals too but they just have legs. And she said she doesnt like the fact that they eat live mice but i kept telling her i wouldnt feed them live. Shes still stuck on that one side of the fence and how can i persuade her to let me get a snake? I really need help with this because i want to have a snake really bad.

Well, there is only a couple small problems. First off, it's her house, and unfrotunately you muse abide by her rules. You could just try and get her to understand they are gentle and you would only feed Frozen Thawed and make sure it couldn't get out of its cage. But then again, as I said it's her rules.

Secondly if you do not have the time to dedicate to your other animals, perhaps you should wait on getting a ball. While you do not have to feed them every day, they still should be handled and you would need time to get to know the animal. This is just my opinion of course, but it seems as though you have a pretty busy schedule and if I were you, I would just wait until you have more free time.

Sorry I couldn't offer any better advice.

Ya but im freeing up more time if i got a ball because id get rid of two or three chameleons and get one ball. And chameleons take a lot more time and effort.

Thanks

I'll tell you what to do.

First you get rid of all of your other animals like you planned on doing.

Then get yourself a nice ball python set up. Tank, lights, dig. thremo/humidity meter, hides, plants, the whole works. Put everything you can think of in that tank. Except for the snake. Yes, leave the tank empty.

Now, here's how you get the snake. Spend as much time looking into the tank. Act as if there was an animal in there.
Clean it,
admire it,
talk to it.

Either she will feel sorry for you talking to an empty tank, and get you a snake.

Or, she will think you've gone off of your rocker. And we all know that mom's don't want people knowing that thier baby is crazy. So, she'll do just about anything to keep that a secret. Even allowing you to have a snake.

Good luck!

good one Quinton

Also, get a cage with a lock (and make sure to lock it every time you put the snake back), so your mom won't have to worry about a possible escapee.

the whole tank thing above sounds great and if she does not come around after a week or two, buy a rubber snake and put in there and still be treating everything like it is real. not to scare her but just to show her that this is what it would be like. most people think a 2 lb. 3 foot snake can eat a 140 lb 5' 7" person. they just arnt use to snakes. sit down with her and see what her actual concerns are and then go and write down how you would over come these. she just might be impressed that you have taken the time to make her understand. my mom would not let me get a snake and then when i got married and the same thing - remember - wives are just like mothers so think seriously about getting married !!!! i know have a hugh collection of balls, i eat ice cream in the morning, i run around with sissors in my hands i stay up until 3 and sometimes wear the same pair of underwear 2 days in a row !!!! - just kidding about the underwear thing.

Hey now!!! The advice you gave is good, but I must take offense at the wife comment. I have 2 female BPs and am slowly trying to grow my collection, MUCH to the dislike of my HUSBAND!!! He loves his monitors, but "can't trust anything without legs or eyelids".

i was generalizing of course. if there were more women like you out there, there would be more happier guys out there !!!

Magick Mar 07, 2005 12:55 PM

LOL... I wasn't too offended

If my husband was more "snake tolerant", we'd have a full breeding program by now!!! As it is, I only have a high yellow '04 female and a 4' normal female out on a breeding loan to a Bell Line Pastel (keeping my fingers crossed).
