Are you sure he just didn't have his leg tucked up?

Our parrots usually stand on a perch with one foot curled up.

I don't exaclty know why they do it though.

if you look to the left of his standing leg, you can see where his leg is without the foot. it was not tucked up inside of him. we stared at him for a while just to make sure

AFAIK, some animals do it to conserve heat/minimize the cooling effect- flamingos and the like where feet are often submersed in water. Most of the time, bipeds are only actually standing on one leg whether both are down or not, so having it out isn't really necessary.

I've seen one like that before down in Oregon.

My neighbor feeds some of our local seagulls from her deck during the summer. She has one favorite she's named Gimpy because he has a lame foot. He gets special treatment, because she noticed he always missed out on food since the other gulls would beat him to it. She's been feeding him and a few others for 4 years now. I've seen an article that says seagulls typically only live a couple of years, but from what we've seen they live much longer than that. Here's another interesting fact. My neighbor and her husband always head south for the winter and are gone until mid April. Last year I noticed that the seagulls started to show up at their deck about a week or two before they returned. Some birds are smart.

I live in NYC so there are pigeons everywhere.. about once a year or so I'll see one hopping along with only 1 foot. The poor things!
