Mercury Vapor Bulbs

HopeMarie Mar 06, 2005 12:07 AM

I recently read on www.HappyReptileFarm.com that "Special Mercury bulbs which are manufactured specifically for use with reptiles provide the most effective source of UVB. These bulbs provide a bright light source, heat and UVB. They provide more intense UVB than flourescent tubes and can deliver it from a distance of several feet."

I was wondering if anyone here uses Vapor bulbs for their sliders? I was considering getting rid of my aquarium hood which is a ZooMed Deluxe slider hood which is tall and bulky. and instead, just getting a dome light to sit on the screen and using a vapor bulb in it. I was thinking it would provide enough UVB and also serve as a good basking spot bulb.

Has anyone used these or know anything else about them? Or if this sounds like a good idea?
If so, my turtle tank is a 20 gallon tall since mine are still hatchlings. around what size wattage would i probably need?

I've also got a 20-gallon tank (long) and I've been using mercury vapor bulbs exclusively for about the past 9 months or so. Right now I'm using an ESU 160 (I think) watt spot, hung in a Zoo Med brooder dome fixture about a foot above my turtle's basking spot. Crumpet's basking more with this one than he did with the Zoo Med Powersuns I had - which I don't recommend; both bulbs blew out on me way before the year warrantly was up - and it was a reasonable price at under $30.

Mercury vapors provide UVA, UVB and heat, so you only need the one lamp, and I'd say go for it. Saves space and is probably cheaper, ultimately. Reptiledirect.com has a really good selection of mercury vapors, and you might want to browse around there for a bit.

Best of luck!

We just got our RES this past wknd, so he doesn't have a UV bulb, yet, but I'm planning on getting a Mercury Vapor for him. We've been using a Zoomed Powersun for our Beardie for close to a year now, & we love it (other than the fact that they blow far more often than is advertised... be sure to fill in & return the registration card so that you can return the damaged bulb for a replacement if it blows in under a year).

One thing to keep in mind is that MVB's get *hot* (I don't think I've seen any that are less than 100watts). You'll probably want to get a 100watt flood (not spot) lamp, & set it up so that you can adjust the height of the lamp to get the correct temperature (you're probably not going to be able to just set the light on the screen... our beardie's in a 50 gallon breeder tank & his basking spot is around 100 degrees w/ the MVB just abve the screen. Also be sure you've got an accurate thermometer on the basking spot so you know exactly what temps the new light is producing, otherwise you're likely to end up w/ turtle soup ). Another caveat: Mercury Vapor bulbs are *very* touchy... the more vibration they're subjected to, the more likely they are to blow prematurely (which is why I'm about to buy my third one in a year for the beardie ;P ). Ideally, you should have it set up so that you don't have to move it, ever, except to carefully adjust the height until the temperature is right.

HTH!
