I recently read on www.HappyReptileFarm.com that "Special Mercury bulbs which are manufactured specifically for use with reptiles provide the most effective source of UVB. These bulbs provide a bright light source, heat and UVB. They provide more intense UVB than flourescent tubes and can deliver it from a distance of several feet."
I was wondering if anyone here uses Vapor bulbs for their sliders? I was considering getting rid of my aquarium hood which is a ZooMed Deluxe slider hood which is tall and bulky. and instead, just getting a dome light to sit on the screen and using a vapor bulb in it. I was thinking it would provide enough UVB and also serve as a good basking spot bulb.
Has anyone used these or know anything else about them? Or if this sounds like a good idea?
If so, my turtle tank is a 20 gallon tall since mine are still hatchlings. around what size wattage would i probably need?

). Another caveat: Mercury Vapor bulbs are *very* touchy... the more vibration they're subjected to, the more likely they are to blow prematurely (which is why I'm about to buy my third one in a year for the beardie ;P ). Ideally, you should have it set up so that you don't have to move it, ever, except to carefully adjust the height until the temperature is right.
