Taiwan Beauty Snakes

DerekMoynihan Mar 06, 2005 12:04 PM

Anyone working with these snakes? I am interested in the subspecies found on Taiwan. If I am not mistaken these are the largest of the beauty snakes. I saw an adult at a show a few years ago and I was very impressed by its size and docility.

I work with both them and blues, my blues are actually longer than the Tai's, but the Tai's are much heavier in body than the Blues seem to be. Both are very impressive in their own way...My blues are over 8', and my Tai's are around 7', but are much younger than the blues still. I know of blues over 9, but haven't personally seen any pictures of Tai's that big...yet.

I have seen tai's over 9 feet and pics of at least one that was bigger. I have heard of them being recorded at 12 feet, in captivity however many of them have been intergraded with other subspecies and the resulting offspring are shorter as adults and have a fatter body compared to their length than purebred taiwans. My pair were neglected as youngsters (the owner fed them only one mouse a week and didn't like them because they "looked evil" and by the time I got them they were quite stunted, still after a couple of years of good treatment they are over 8 foot and still growing.

I breed mine every year, in fact the male was starting to take an interest in the female last night...

I've never heard of one going 12ft! I've heard upwards near 10, but the only colubrids I know of that have been recorded regularly over the 10ft mark are yellow tailed cribos, members of Zaocys, Z. korros regularly grows over 11ft, and Spilotes pullatus.

I did a little more research and decided the Taiwans were for me so I bought a young pair (hopefully they are purebred Taiwans) from Mark Lucas.
