Fire-bellies

system_of_a_down Mar 06, 2005 01:32 PM

Hi,
Could you guys post pics of your cages? I might be buying my friend a fire bellied newt for his birthday but i want to know what to make the cage like and what i need. Also is it better to keep one or multiple?

I keep four chinese firebelly newts in a ten gallon tank, with tile covering the floors and a large rock and other things such as a hammock to climb out onto. The pic below shows the tank before I changed the gravel to tile. Gravel is okay as long as its big enough so that the newts can't eat it. Temps are around 60 degrees, and they went a little lower this winter so my firebellies have produced some nice offspring I used to keep only one, but they are communal, so I got three more. They are fed frozen bloodworms (their favorite), daphnia, tubifex worms, and occasional blackworms. They are doing wonderfully. Any more questions, feel free to ask.

By the way, the tank is changed around quite a bit as well, and the temps were higher then because it was summer and we hadn't put them into our cold bedroom then. They also have a lot more stuff to hide under.

Yes, keep temps around 55-65 degrees. I still live with my parents and live in NC, so the lowest I can keep mine is 68. I have about a half inch of gravel with 4 Java Ferns. Very easy to clean. Stay away from Bacopa plants and plants like that. They decay very fast and are a pain to clean. A small turtle dock is a good place for above water resting. I only have 1 CFB, but plan to get more when PetsMart re-stocks. lol. Good luck with your friends gift, but make sure he/she is knowledgeable before you give them a pet. Make sure you have a lid on the tank, they are master escape artists.
