first ball eggs, and want to do it right !

jimfmcdonald Mar 06, 2005 02:20 PM

I have been breeding snakes for 15 years but theese are my first python eggs and the first time I have used a incubater. please let me know if this all seems right or if I need to do something different. my female 50% het albino (the male is a 100%het albino)laid 5 good looking eggs last night and I did not have my incubater set up yet. I did get it set up in a hour or so and the temps are at 90 to 92 on a small amount of vermeculite mixed with perlite. (not to wet). ok so what is wrong? or is this ok? pitures are of female on her eggs and of my set up. and I did weigh the eggs, they were 498 grams for the five or them, is that good? thanks.

90-92 degrees seems a little warm. You might back down to about 87-88 degrees.

up or down. You didn't mention your humidity level. This is a big killer for BP eggs.

Jim,

I'd consider putting a clutch that size in a bigger container for incubation. Give them something at least the size of a large rubbermaid shoebox (like the old 2220 size). The smaller the incubation container, the less room there is for error with temperature or humidity fluctuations.

If you're worried about the container fitting within a hovabator, replace the bottom of the hovabator with the bottom of a 17"x17"x9" styro fish shipping box - the top should fit nicely...if you need a more precise fit, line the edges of the top with duct tape to give it a snug fit.

Nice clutch BTW...good luck with it!

HTH!

Just because I have a short attention span doesn't mean

I'd recommend calling around to local pet stores, especially if you can find one that specializes in fish. Most places will usually let you have them.

I would be very careful in moving the eggs at this time. You jave set them up and if you are not careful you could mess up the cluch with temp fluctuations, and that wouldn't be good. I would leave them set up like you have them. But if you really want to move them, DO IT THIS WAY.

1) Go get another hovabator from a Seed and feed/Co Op store, They usually have chicken hatchers that are close to hovabators.
2) Go to a local pet store(s) and get a large fish cooler, They all usually have them(pet co, pet smart, etc.)
3) Then get some DUCK tape and tape The TOP of the HUVABATOR to the BOTTOM FISH COOLER ,PUT DUCK TAPE on BOTH sides to make a HINDGED lid, That worked best for me when I used a hovabator.
4) LAST but NOT least.....SET THE SECOND INCUBATOR to the temp you want and put the NEW EGG BOX in the Incubator and let it heat UP to the correct Temp. IF it is NOT DONE in this TYPE of WAY you COULD SHOCK the EGGS from the TEMP changes. Hope this HELPS

OH yea..... then Convert the other INCUBATOR To match the first one and you will be SET for your OTHER CLUTCHES you talked about in OTHER POSTS. Thanks DAVID

Congratulations on those nice-looking eggs. I’d suggest backing off to a range of 89 to 90 degrees, shooting for 89 degrees. Your high end of 92 degrees might cause death or deformities. Regarding the small egg container – I’d open it up maybe once or twice a week to ensure adequate oxygen availability. But then, that shouldn’t be much of a burden for you, as I assume everyone is like me and likes to check on their eggs’ progress during incubation.

One final caution - I would suggest double-checking the accuracy of the thermometer in your photograph if at all possible.

You beat me this year.
I exect my first clutch in a few months.
I'm glad that male did well for you.
I had a horrible experiance with my first clutch.
Got two babies out of 8 eggs.... and some of the 8 when cut open were almost fully developed with patterns.
Nice looking blackbacks.
I think I let the eggs get too wet and the incubator temps fluctuated.
Don't over moisten them!
Good luck!
Didn't we agree I get one of the albinos???
j/k

Congratulations, the first clutch is so exciting.

I hope all goes well.

As mentioned they do look a little crowded in there, make sure they get some fresh air.
