Pointy shell edges

spycspider Mar 06, 2005 02:53 PM

Hi,

I posted this question a while ago in the softshell forums but never got a reply so I figure I'd try something here. My hatchling Florida softshell has been growing and eating well for over a year now. Just a few months ago, I realize he seems to be shriveling up....as if his muscle isn't keeping up with his shell and bones. There are bony protrusions that are jutting out on both sides of his shell--basically, he looks like a kite, rather than an oval. It could be his ribs protruding and the lower end carapace is flimsy as well. He doesn't look like he's got any fungus spots nor ulcers. Is this some kind of MBD or calcium deficiency (eating mostly Reptomin and has access to artificial UVB)? His appetite has been good until recently, so I'm kinda worried and stumped. I've transferred him to a quarantine tank for now. Thanks.

Johnny

I would like to add that a few months ago, I noticed a thin strand of white that was hanging from his rectum....I thought I could make out segments of what looked like an intestinal worm. Haven't seen it since so I am not sure it was a tapeworm or not. However, since he looks frail and debilitated, could this be a possible sign?

Thanks.

it may be suffering malnutrition due to intestinal parasties in spite of a good diet. You would need a real fecal exam from a vet to confirm this.
