i just noticed this week, my red eared sliders have some small white patches on their shells..they are not soft, it just looks like the green has come off..what is wrong..they seem fine

My turtles also had that. I wound up bringing them to the vet, and he informed me that it was the very begining stages of shell rot. If there is no strong fishy smell coming from them, that's probably what your turtles have also. It can be caused from hard water in your tank. To fix this, you should take a trip to your vet, and pick up a bottle of Betadine scrub. It should only be about $10 or $15. Once you have that, rinse off your turtle, and scrub the betadine scrub on him. Be very careful not to get any in his eyes. Leave the scrub on him for about 20 - 25 min, and leave him out of the water while the scrub is on. After this time, rinse him off, making sure you got all the betadine scrub off before returning him to his tank. Do this about twice a week. It helped my turtles, and not their good as new!
